Dutch Demography Day 2016
On Wednesday 23 November 2016, the Netherlands Demographic Society (NVD) is organizing the 9th Dutch Demography Day in the Academy Building of Utrecht University. At the Demography Day 2016 the most recent findings in the broad and interdisciplinary field of population studies will be presented. The scientific program comprises a Keynote Address and several rounds of both English and Dutch language parallel sessions, as well as a poster session.
The Revolution of Adult Longevity (keynote presentation)
This lecture puts the current adult longevity revolution in perspective with the main gerontological models of the years 1980-1990. We try to give a precise definition of this revolution and show how it differs from the usual demographic transitions as the fall in infant mortality. We describe the consequences and especially the dynamics of the emergence of new age groups and discuss the impact on societies, organized in 3 age groups, young people, working age people and the elderly people. What does ageing well mean in this context?
The discussion follows four avenues. The first is the surprising inability to admit the variability of ageing trajectories; which leads to propose unrealistic models. The second is the existence of a possible trade-off between longevity and functionality. The third concerns the near impossibility of experts to anticipate a continuation of this revolution. Finally, the fourth avenue begins to explore what could be a society based on 4 age groups.
