Dutch Demography Day 2013
On Wednesday 27th of November 2013 the Netherlands Demographic Society (NVD) hosted the sixth Dutch Demography Day. Demographers and researchers from other disciplines had the opportunity to present their current research. The day started with a plenary session with the theme “Generation Y and the labour market”. In this session health, skills and labour market participation of young generations were discussed in the context of ageing societies and high youth unemployment. The plenary meeting was followed by three rounds of parallel sessions with presentations on various topics.
Plenary Session Generation Y and the labour market
The plenary session was opened by Rolf van der Velden (ROA). Rolf van der Velden is professor at Maastricht University and program director Education and Occupational Career at the Research Centre for Education and the Labour Market (ROA). His key-note speech was titled Use it or lose it and in this speech he reflected on the age-related differences in people’s key information processing skills and the use of these skills in different environments. Van der Velden concluded that specifically the education level and the use of skills at home had an effect on the preservation of information processing skills.
The next keynote speech was from Paulien Bongers (TNO). Paulien Bongers is head of the department Work and Health at TNO and appointed member of the Health Council. She also works with VUmc. She described the relationship between health and labour market skills among the younger generations and argued (mental) health and access to the labour market are closely interconnected. She spoke more specifically on the high drop-out due to burn-out among the lower educated youth. TNO studies the possibilities to decrease this drop out and concludes it is important to focus on the emotional intelligence of employers. For that purpose some interventions were developed.
NIDI Master Thesis Award
The Netherlands Interdisciplinary Demographic Institute (NIDI) awarded a master thesis award of 500 euros. The prize was awarded to Giuliana Zegarra for her master thesis 'Modeling fertility by order of birth', written at KU Leuven (University of Leuven), (supervised by Prof. Ester Rizzi and Antoine Pierrard).
