The plenary session started with a keynote speech of Prof. Dr. Hein de Haas (University of Amsterdam, University of Oxford and University of Maastricht), entitled “Theorising Migration: Why Push-Pull Sucks”. During the day demographers and researchers of several disciplines presented their research in three rounds of parallel sessions and one poster session. The 2017 NVD Poster Award was won by Paul Sellies for his poster “Exploring cohort and country variation in the link between social background and marital attitudes: a study using ESS data”. The NIDI-NVD Master Thesis Award was presented to Winida Albertha for the thesis “Internal Return Migration in Indonesia: Who Returns and Why?”.
